What is Distance Education?
Establish a definition of Distance Education, after analyzing how define some educational institutions. Examine the origin of distance education and compare the term with similar expressions.
Before attempting to explain the complex and controversial issue is useful to define the terms in question. In this case, before defining distance education, we should first define Education.
Education
A dictionary definition of education is:
“The act or process of educating or being educated.” Or more simple “The act of imparting knowledge.
It is important to note that the words in the definitions above are action or process. But Education is associated with a place such as school, university, schools and not the process.
Learning
With regard to the concept of learning, there are various conceptions and interpretations. Examine some of them, as well as elements of them.
We call learning modality or man’s ability to learn, which occurred as a result of motor activities that cannot be attributed simply to the process of growth and development as human beings.
We can say that learning is a process of acquiring knowledge and skills. For this process can be defined as learning, rather than passing a simple restraint must involve retention of knowledge or skill in question to allow for their demonstration at a future time. Learning can be defined in a more formal “as a relatively permanent change in behavior or potential behavior, comes from experience.”
We note that learning can be understood:
As a product, ie the result of an experience or a change that comes with practice.
As a process in which the behavior changes, improves or controls.
As a function since it is the change that occurs when the subject interacts with the information (materials, activities and academic experiences).

Getting An Education At Home While Working At Home
Posted by admin | Home Schooling | Posted on October 31st, 2010
You may be working from home or wanting to work at home and feel like you need to get a better education. Home education programs are offered by a number of accredited schools. Deciding on what school and program will take research and time. Research will indicate if the particular program or school worked for the people that completed their training there. Decide what skills you would like to increase and what program will benefit your knowledge base for your working from home or home based-business venture. You will also have to figure if you have enough time to devote to an educational program with the time you will be attending classes online and the work that will be required from you.
There are many different schools and programs to look into before deciding what is best for you. If there is a particular school that you wanted to attend you can research if the school offers an online program and if you would qualify for such a program. Not every degree that you would get at a regular college or university is going to be offered online. This is why it is important to research different programs to see if there is one that will fit your needs and that is available online.
Keep in mind that you can devote as much or as little time as you have to an online college program. If you work full-time from home you may have to attend classes that are on a part-time basis. If you are working part-time you may be able to devote a lot more time to a full-time college program. Consider what time you will have available and how much time the program will take for you to complete.
It is also important to realize that online college programs are just as difficult as university classes taken on the campus. You will have to work hard to succeed at your classes, needing time to study and write papers if the classes deem that as part of their program. Make sure you can devote extra time for homework and other endeavors related to succeeding in the class.
Another important factor when deciding if an online education is for you is for you to consider how much you will be paying in tuition. When a class or program is offered online it will cost just as much as if you attended the school. Decide if you have enough money to devote to the program. You can take loans out to supplement the cost of tuition, but remember when you are done with school you will have to pay the loans back. Consider how much you will have to take out and if it is worth taking that amount of money out. In other words consider how much you will make working from home or having a home-based business and decide if getting an education will be worth it. Education will give you the edge in a competitive business geared world.
Education in USA ? a country of opportunities
Posted by admin | Education Forums | Posted on October 20th, 2010
The best destination for a student to go for his higher education would be USA, due to its rich heritage, developed infrastructure and wide range of options, not to forget the degree that is recognized all over the globe. What more could a student ask for. USA surely is a land of opportunities; it has so much to offer that a student would be lucky and privileged to get admission in one of the USA universities.
Whether it’s a small university in a small town or a big university in the main city you are looking for, USA has it all. It has a plethora of not just subjects and courses but also well reputed universities. Every year, thousands of students try and go to USA for higher studies. It has options suiting to every one’s needs and preferences, no wonder it lures students from different parts of world setting them in the top of the careers with their advanced technology and modern teaching methods, which is the reason why it isn’t an easy job to get into a good USA university. It needs lot of hard work and preparation to get admission to study in USA. Three main requisites to get admission are:
Good grades/marks. Strong financial support. Strong hold on the English language and communication.
As per stats, USA is known to absorb the largest number of students from all over the globe. In 2007, it enrolled more then 6 lakh students at international level in its universities, out of which more then 80 thousand were Indians. The count is steadily rising every year.
Education system – The education system in USA is very different from that prevailing in India. It’s an informal system where the students’ view is equally taken into account. The students are encouraged to openly discuss their point and open discussions are held. Though it’s not only studies all the time, as fun and parties are equally a part of every campus environment but it’s a logical balance of both.
Standard tests – Every university in USA follows one or the other standard tests that prevail. To get into a university in USA, one needs to score well in any one or more of the following tests:
GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test. SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test. GRE – Graduate Record Examination. TOEFL (for non Americans) – test Of English As Foreign Language
Most of these tests are designed to evaluate the skills and aptitude of a student rather than their depth of knowledge.
Financial aid – To support education financially, there are three main ways to do so. One is funding via university, second is funding via private source and third is funding via government sources. This financial help works on two grounds. Firstly, it is on the basis of your need that is they evaluate your yearly income and your paying capacity and then decide the amount. Secondly, it is on the merit basis. It is rewarded as a scholarship to the student based upon his academic performance and scores. Besides this, many students opt to earn while they study there. It’s a largely followed tradition for migrating students.
USA is a good option for a student to go for his/her higher education courses. To get admission, you should apply personally to each university or sit for the common test to admission. More information regarding the colleges and universities in USA can be found on the internet, education sites, education forums etc.
Education is a Necessity of Life
Posted by admin | Education Forums | Posted on June 20th, 2010
The primary ineluctable facts of the birth and death of each one of the constituent members in a social group determine the necessity of education. On one hand, there is the contrast between the immaturity of the new-born members of the group—its future sole representatives—and the maturity of the adult members who possess the knowledge and customs of the group. On the other hand, there is the necessity that these immature members be not merely physically preserved in adequate numbers, but that they be initiated into the interests, purposes, information, skill, and practices of the mature members: otherwise the group will cease its characteristic life. Even in a savage tribe, the achievements of adults are far beyond what the immature members would be capable of if left to themselves. With the growth of civilization, the gap between the original capacities of the immature and the standards and customs of the elders increases. Mere physical growing up, mere mastery of the bare necessities of subsistence will not suffice to reproduce the life of the group. Deliberate effort and the taking of thoughtful pains are required. Beings who are born not only unaware of, but quite indifferent to, the aims and habits of the social group have to be rendered cognizant of them and actively interested. Education, and education alone, spans the gap.
Society exists through a process of transmission quite as much as biological life. This transmission occurs by means of communication of habits of doing, thinking, and feeling from the older to the younger. Without this communication of ideals, hopes, expectations, standards, opinions, from those members of society who are passing out of the group life to those who are coming into it, social life could not survive. If the members who compose a society lived on continuously, they might educate the new-born members, but it would be a task directed by personal interest rather than social need. Now it is a work of necessity.
The Place of Formal Education cannot be overemphasized. There is, accordingly, a marked difference between the education which every one gets from living with others, as long as he really lives instead of just continuing to subsist, and the deliberate educating of the young. In the former case the education is incidental; it is natural and important, but it is not the express reason of the association. While it may be said, without exaggeration, that the measure of the worth of any social institution, economic, domestic, political, legal, religious, is its effect in enlarging and improving experience; yet this effect is not a part of its original motive, which is limited and more immediately practical. Religious associations began, for example, in the desire to secure the favor of overruling powers and to ward off evil influences; family life in the desire to gratify appetites and secure family perpetuity; systematic labor, for the most part, because of enslavement to others, etc. Only gradually was the by-product of the institution, its effect upon the quality and extent of conscious life, noted, and only more gradually still was this effect considered as a directive factor in the conduct of the institution. How is Education Abroad Related to the College/university Mission Statement?
Posted by admin | Universities / Colleges | Posted on May 31st, 2010
It is important to draw justification for a study abroad program from the college/university mission statement. Look for excerpts from mission statements and senior level administration for internationalizing the curriculum, developing students with a global perspective, preparing students for a global workforce, etc.
Write a mission statement for study abroad that makes it a priority to integrate international education services into the foundation of the college/university mission. A study abroad office mission includes an academic enhancement role and student support services. It is essential to include with your mission statement, some measurable intended outcomes for study abroad. Your statements of intended outcomes will guide your policies and practice.
It is also important to understand that every institution invests dollars and staff in endeavors that support and enhance the institutional mission and outcomes. Just as we see different levels of support for campus housing on various campuses, we also see different levels of support for international education.
Study abroad has long been considered an elective or “luxury” experience and thus has not been tied to the core values (and therefore finances) of most institutions. The closer you correlate study abroad with institutional priorities, the more leverage you will have in gaining support for your endeavors.
An example of a campus mission statement that is easily identifiable with education abroad.
Mission Statement:
We educate students to put the liberal arts into action as citizens in a global society.
And they go on to describe their core values as:
Academic Excellence, Diversity, Equity, and Shared Governance, Education of the Entire Person, Adherence to Common Ethical and Moral Standards Community Service and Global Citizenship, Environmental Stewardship.
This makes it easy to integrate study abroad into the core values of the institution.
Another example of a university mission statement is:
Our mission is to educate and nurture students, to create knowledge, and to provide service to our community and beyond. Committed to excellence and proud of the diversity of our University family, we strive to develop future leaders of our nation and the world.
However, some university mission statements require a little more work to integrate international education into the core values. For example consider the following mission statement
Our mission is to discover, create, transmit, and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society. This mission is accomplished through instruction, which communicates the knowledge and values and imparts the skills necessary for individuals to lead responsible, productive, and personally satisfying lives; through research, scholarship, and creative activities, which advance knowledge and enhance the educational process; and through public service, which contributes to the solution of societal problems and enriches the quality of life in the State.
And yet other university mission statements do not lend themselves easily to integrating international education as a core value.
Our mission as a multipurpose public institution is to develop educated persons of inquiring, creative, and disciplined intelligence to be competent in careers that are fulfilling and to be socially responsible contributors to society. This University strives, therefore, to graduate people on the bachelor’s and master’s level who have had sound education in the arts and sciences and relevant specialized training built upon that base.
A study abroad office mission statement can also come in many diverse forms and visions. The following mission statement is an example of a diverse vision:
The Office for Study Abroad promotes opportunities for global education to all eligible students in order for them to gain an understanding of other countries, regions, languages, and cultures through direct overseas experience.
Some universities have taken the approach of being very explicit about their connection to the institution’s core values:
In support of the University’s mission to “promote the process of lifelong learning from both global and integrative perspectives,” the Office for Study Abroad offers international education opportunities to students through the University’s overseas study centers, international exchange partners, and affiliated organizations. As an extension of the University’s academic program, we promote academic excellence and provide access to high quality international education programs in expanding geographic destinations to serve a diverse student population representing a wide array of academic disciplines. As educators, we facilitate the academic, personal, professional, and intercultural development of students through the programs and services we provide.
And one more example of a carefully crafted mission statement that not only integrates international education into the university core value, but also sets criteria and objectives for policy:
We are a world leader in research, teaching, and public engagement. Many hands – at home and abroad – make it so, and many benefit. Study abroad is one of the ways in which our students and others build and benefit from our University’s international engagement.
Our mission is to provide and facilitate a range of study and education opportunities abroad consonant in breadth and quality with on-campus curricula, offered for short or long duration according to curricular objectives and in consideration of students’ obligations, at a range of costs and with opportunities for scholarship or subvention such that study abroad opportunity is available to all students in good standing. Attention to students’ health, safety, and well-being abroad underlies all other considerations.
Our intention is that through study abroad we and our partners prepare students for global citizenship, guiding them to a greater understanding of world and domestic cultures and encouraging them to share that understanding with their hosts abroad and communities at home; that students gain or enhance area, linguistic, subject, and cultural knowledge and competence; that students contribute to their host communities; and that students emerge wiser and more engaged citizens
